Public or Private Maternity Care: What’s Right for You?
In Melbourne, we are fortunate to have high-quality public hospitals that provide excellent maternity care. Many obstetricians, including Dr. Caroline Hoggenmueller, maintain involvement in public hospitals to stay up to date with best practices, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to the training of future doctors. If you choose to have your baby in the public system, you will receive care from a team of doctors and midwives, but your delivery may not be performed by your chosen obstetrician.
Private maternity care with Dr Caroline
For those who prefer continuity of care with a dedicated obstetrician, private maternity care is an excellent option. As a private patient, you will have your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care managed exclusively by Dr. Caroline at:
✔️ Mercy Hospital for Women (Private) – Heidelberg
As a private patient, you will benefit from:
✅ One-on-one care with Dr. Caroline throughout your pregnancy (approximately 15 scheduled visits)
✅ Access to a dedicated team – call the practice anytime with questions or concerns
✅ In-room services, including ultrasound scans and cardiotocography (CTG) monitoring for your baby’s well-being
✅ Personalised birth planning, tailored to your preferences and medical needs
Whether you choose public or private care, Dr. Caroline is committed to providing expert, compassionate support throughout your pregnancy journey.
Your Birthing Options
Every pregnancy and birth is different. Dr Caroline will talk through your options with you throughout pregnancy, taking into account your preferences, your medical history and what is safest for you and your baby.
Depending on your circumstances, your birth may involve:
- Vaginal birth
- Induction of labour
- Planned caesarean birth
- Assisted vaginal birth, using vacuum or forceps where appropriate
- Pain relief options during labour, including epidural analgesia provided by the anaesthetic team
- Individualised planning for twins, breech presentation or other more complex pregnancies
Dr Caroline’s role is to help you understand the options, answer your questions and make a plan with you. That plan may change as your pregnancy progresses, and if it does, she will explain why and discuss the safest next step with you.
